It seems everyone is a giant fan of doing the \u2018End of Year Wrap-up\u2019 post: tallying accomplishments, reflecting on the worth of their year. And while I think it\u2019s always a good idea to take stock of yourself and your life for personal reasons, I feel slightly ick about doing it publicly, so I won\u2019t.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead, I\u2019ll talk about something I find endlessly more entertaining; our obsession with Monsters.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have to admit this comes on the heels of thoroughly enjoying Guillermo del Toro\u2019s rendition of Frankenstein (which I\u2019ve already seen twice, and has achieved \u2018comfort film\u2019 status alongside <em>Interview with the Vampire, Hannibal (the series), The Craft, Crimson Peak, The Witch, Heathers, Natural Born Killers<\/em>, the list goes on&#8230;)<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, fair warning to stop reading here if you haven\u2019t seen the film, as there are small spoilers ahead. You were warned.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f499360 elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"f499360\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8718c6b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8718c6b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I feel the need to call attention to one of the most underrated scenes in the film:<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In an early scene, Victor\u2019s father motions for the servant to bring him his wife\u2019s plate. She\u2019s left the gristle and juices from her dinner, and so, he deftly sops up the waste with a piece of bread and tells her to eat it. He watches until she does.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This moment unsettled me at my core more than gratuitous violence or gore ever could. In fact, I was smiling during the insanely jaunty creature assembly scene, as Victor enthusiastically works more diligently than any butcher to the rather twee backing track.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By contrast, the subtle nuance in the dinner scene established Victor\u2019s father as something truly monstrous in one elegant, simple interaction.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is the sort of character building that intrigues me. Then again, it\u2019s a huge part of my own work.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what really brings this to the forefront for me is\u2014yes\u2014I\u2019ve started writing something new. Entirely new. I\u2019m in full creative freedom mode, pantsing all the way\u2014something I rarely allow myself. This story is terrible. The characters are worse. But it\u2019s given me the freedom to explore a space that fascinates so many of us drawn to horror;<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-0251abc elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"0251abc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h6 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">What makes a Monster?<\/h6>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-89d5a2b elementor-widget-divider--view-line elementor-widget elementor-widget-divider\" data-id=\"89d5a2b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"divider.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-divider\">\n\t\t\t<span class=\"elementor-divider-separator\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ed56aa2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ed56aa2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I know this is nothing new if you\u2019ve read my work, but I think this a theme I could return to endlessly, and still surprise myself. If <em>The Last Dawn<\/em> asks the reader; what if we empathize with the villain? Then my new story asks; can a Monster achieve redemption?<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also allows me to explore the terrors of casual cruelty in a way I haven\u2019t truly touched before. I find the nuance fascinating. When apathy comes so naturally, that it hardly warrants a second thought. It becomes instinct. Is this more evil for its callousness? Or less because we can write it off as a thing\u2019s nature?<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m no philosopher, but this concept has haunted me for a while now, and I think I\u2019ve finally found the right story, and the right characters to explore it. Though I do wonder if I\u2019ll find readers brave enough to take the ride.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always I can\u2019t help but try to find a way, much like del Toro, to make the ugly beautiful in its own way. I\u2019ve always admired this about certain art directors and cinematographers, even costume designers contribute significantly. Though I\u2019ve always preferred novels to films, I very much respect the power of infusing story with aesthetic to reinforce emotional themes. I\u2019ve heard the arguments that this style of filmmaking values \u2018style over substance\u2019 (every artist\u2019s greatest fear!) and usually espoused by those who understand neither. I\u2019ve always favored the romantics, the surrealists, and come out on the side that art is meant to elevate, to curate, to show beauty in all its forms.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I simply chose to do so, to the best of my ability, with prose. In the right light, the right context, blood can glisten as beautifully as any cut ruby. A scream can be as multifaceted as any soprano\u2019s aria.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s all a matter of perspective, darlings.<\/p><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s enough philosophy from me, I think. I\u2019ll be crawling back into my crypt now to await the New Year and see what tidings it brings. Since my book club is comprised entirely of former and current circus artists, this one hits close to home. I can smell the rosin and tape.<\/p><h5 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>Empire of the Dawn<\/em> by Jay Kristoff<\/strong><\/h5><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I admit I haven\u2019t started reading this one yet, but it is sitting there on my parlor table waiting for me. I am saving it for the proper moment where I can enjoy it for maximum impact, I expect to be quite heartbroken by it.<\/p><h5 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>Bury Your Gays <\/em>by Chuck Tingle<\/strong><\/h5><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one has been haunting my bookshelf for a hot minute so I\u2019m pleased to be finally getting into it. Chuck\u2019s writing is so tight, and always a treat.<\/p><h5 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><em>In the Mountains of Madness<\/em> by H.P. Lovecraft<\/strong><\/h5><p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve been on a bit of a Lovecraft tear lately (see also: my entire post about monsters) and this one is next up on the list. Eldritch horror gives me the wonderful heebie jeebies and well, this re-read of his work doesn\u2019t disappoint. So little scares me these days, but somehow the unknowable horror still gets me.
